Should Mobile App Developers Focus on Free or Paid Mobile Applications

Should Mobile App Developers Focus on Free or Paid Mobile Applications

With so much Demand for Mobile Applications, Does it make a Difference?

As the Mobile Industry grows, one common trend which mobile application developers and mobile app “experts” are observing is that mobile applications are starting to become the fundamental backbone for Smartphone’s and tablet PCs. The importance that mobile applications play on Smartphone devices (such as the iPhone, Android, Blackberry) and Tablets (such as the iPad, Samsung Zoom) are critical and without the hundreds of thousands of mobile apps which are available for these mobile devices, they would be nothing but over-sized mobile devices with a web browser. In essence, what makes a Smartphone worth buying is the fact that there are so many mobile applications available for one to download onto their Smartphone mobile device.

In today’s current day and age, mobile applications are available in two different forms: Paid versions and Free Versions. Free mobile applications tend to be supported by ads which is the way that mobile application develops receive revenue from the app they developed. This method of developing application for free does not give the mobile app developers revenue right away but in the long run, these mobile app developers may actually get more revenue from advertising displayed on the mobile app throughout time. At the same, if a mobile application development firm or mobile app developer is interested in getting money right away, they can simply charge a certain price for each time their mobile app is downloaded.

At the same time, another method is paid mobile applications. These mobile applications are ones which an individual must pay to download and use the mobile app. This will give the mobile app developers revenue right away for the mobile application he/she developed but at the same time, people may not be willing to pay “x” amount to use an app. The decision on whether to offer paid mobile apps or free mobile apps is completely up to the mobile app developers/mobile application development firm and research has shown that there are pros and cons to both ways of going about releasing

Research has also shown that certain mobile application marketplaces tend to offer more of one kind of mobile application than the other. For example, the Android mobile application marketplace has very few expensive mobile applications and a majority of the apps on that mobile app marketplace are free of charge. On the other end of the spectrum, Apple’s mobile application marketplace tends to have more paid mobile applications and some mobile apps in Apple’s mobile app marketplace tend to be more expensive then the average price of mobile applications which range from $0.99 to $5.00 per mobile application.

At the end of the day, the demand and rising popularity for mobile applications is without question; and research is showing clear evidence that whether a mobile application developer or mobile application development firm decides to offer “paid” mobile apps or “free” mobile apps, there will still be enough demand for both avenues (paid and free mobile applications), to be successful and have a high download rate. The mobile application industry’s popularity and demand is at an all-time high now and mobile application developers and mobile application development firms have the chance to generate a lot of income for themselves if they are able to successfully develop a mobile app which individuals see a need for.

Mobile Application Combines Social Networking with Location Based Technology

Mobile Application Combines Social Networking with Location Based Technology

New Mobile App Expected to be Major Success

Mobile application developers and mobile app “experts” are consistently trying to develop a new mobile application that offers functionalities and options which were never developed into the market in the past. Most recently, a firm named Ripple Mobile located in Dublin, Ohio developed a new mobile application that has the ability to merge social networking and location based GPS technologies into one.

The mobile app is called Ripple Phone Tag and the mobile application allows users to keep in touch and connect with friends and schedule gatherings by sending GPS directions to the meeting place. Users can also track the progress of a friend to see if the person is going the wrong direction, if they are stuck in traffic, or if they have some other type of delay. There has never been a mobile application that offers such functionalities and some mobile application developers and mobile application “experts” believe that this mobile application has the opportunity for great success in the future.

Ripple states that their mobile application is as easy as three simple steps which users can take in order to connect with their friends. The first step is that friends are selected from the users’ mobile phone contact list. Next, the mobile application will send a secure text message invite with the URL link for their confirmation. Once that is done, the friends will be able to connect, communicate and determine a meet-up location. According to Ripple, these steps which any user can take will change the way that individuals connect with friends by taking advantage of the functionalities and mobility that mobile applications allow.

Location-based mobile application on  Windows Mobile platform

It is still unclear which Smartphone platforms this mobile application will be released for but some mobile application developers and mobile application “experts” are predicting that Ripple will release the mobile app onto Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and possibly also Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 and RIM’s Blackberry Smartphone devices. It is also unclear if this mobile app will be a free mobile application to download or one which an individual has to purchase.

The mobile application industry is continuously growing and new advancements such as Ripple’s Phone Tag mobile application only adds more momentum to an already growing industry. There is a bright future ahead for mobile application development firms and mobile application developers and it is the ones who jump aboard the bandwagon soon who will truly reap the benefits and successes that the mobile application industry has to offer.

One of the main motives for Office Depot wanting to develop a mobile application (besides the fact that mobile applications have been gaining popularity and demand in all industries throughout the past year) is because a recent study conducted by ABI Research predicted that by 2015, shoppers worldwide are expected to spend about $119 billion on goods and services purchased through their Mobile Smartphone devices and through mobile applications. The trend of increasing mobile shopping has been growing in the United States as mobile online shopping rose from $396 million in 2008 to $1.2 billion in 2009 and that trend is only expected to go upwards from here on.

An additional feature which Office Depot’s mobile application will have is the ability for shoppers to create a mobile shopping cart that can follow them across multiple Smartphone devices. For example, if a customer were to go online through their computer but did not have time to complete their order, they can log onto their Office Depot mobile application and finish their order from there.

Office Depot plans to expand their mobile application throughout more Smartphone platforms in the future and already has plans to roll the mobile app out to the Blackberry and Microsoft operating systems, as well as tablet devices in the near future. Office Depot is clearly heading in the right direction with regards to reaching out to their customers through mobile applications and many mobile application developers and mobile app “experts” believe that this will not only generate higher sales opportunity for the company but also give customers much easier access to Office Depot’s offerings.

Smartphone Manufactures Focus on Mobile Applications for Advertising

One interesting observation which many mobile application developers and mobile app “experts” have been noticing in the past few months is the emphasis that Smartphone manufacturers put on mobile applications and mobile application marketplaces in their advertising. Currently in the United States, there are commercials and billboards everywhere for Smartphone’s. Every time an individual turns on the television, he/she will see a commercial for Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android, RIM’s Blackberry or Windows Phone 7; but rather then these companies putting emphasis on the functionalities of the Smartphone device (shape, functionality, weight, etc); they put a lot of emphasis on the mobile applications which individuals can download onto that Smartphone or the mobile application marketplace which that specific Smartphone is tailored too.

 http://s0.wp.com/wp-content/themes/pub/freshy/images/headers/header_image6.jpg

What this shows us about the wireless mobile industry is the large influence that mobile applications and mobile application marketplaces have towards the whole mobile industry. One could claim that mobile applications are the heart which keeps this industry going and without mobile apps, the need/demand/popularity for Smartphone’s would be far less than it is today. Even with the fierce competition that there is between Smartphone manufacturers, the more fierce competition is between which mobile application marketplaces have the largest selection of mobile apps to download and install onto one’s Smartphone.

One mobile application developers and mobile application expect stated that: “without mobile applications, the whole Smartphone/Mobile industry would be completely different than it is today. Most Smartphone’s would be used primarily for corporate emails and surfing the web through the mobile devices browser and that would be it. There would be no mobile gaming for individuals to play games on their Smartphone, there would be no user-friendly ways for people to navigate through social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter and their definitely would not be the demand for Smartphone’s as there is today. The whole landscape of wireless technology and mobility would be different if mobile applications and mobile application marketplaces did not exist”

The mobile community and more specifically, cell phone/Smartphone manufactures owe a lot of credit to mobile application developers, mobile applications and mobile app marketplaces for getting them the successes which they have been experiencing in the past few years. The mobile/Smartphone industry is expecting to grow and nearly double in the next few years and a major part of that can be linked to mobile applications and mobile application marketplaces which are available for users to download and install specifics mobiles apps onto their Smartphone devices. The whole industry as a whole is heading in the right direction and there is a bright future for Smartphone manufactures mobile application developers and the mobile application industry as a whole.

Mobile Application Users Becoming Addicted

Mobile Apps Started to have a Profound Effect on its Users
Mobile applications and mobile application marketplaces are becoming so popular and demanding in present day society that there have been recent studies conducted which claim that 83% of daily mobile application users believe that they are addicted to mobile apps. In fact, one individual even claimed that “Mobile Apps are like Xanax on a phone”. With so much popularity and demand for mobile applications, many mobile application “experts” and mobile application developers believe that users are still in the early stages of addiction for mobile applications and the addiction is expected to spread more as we progress into the future.

One may ask how anyone can become addicted to mobile applications on a Smartphone device such as Apple’s iPhone or iPad, Google’s Android or Windows Mobile 7. After doing some research and conducting a survey, it was revealed that one of the main reasons why people get addicted to mobile applications is because users claim that mobile applications expose them to new things (an alarming 91% of mobile app users stated that), while 87% of mobile app users say that mobile applications allow them to have fun no matter where the are in the world and what they are doing. The report also revealed that 77% rely on mobile applications as their personal assistant, while 75% say that mobile applications give them time to relax.

The report clearly reveals that mobile application users have different motives for why they use specific mobile applications and how their addiction for mobile applications starts. But one question which came up during a recent discussion on the mobile application industry was: How do mobile applications users discover and download mobile applications in the first place? With so many mobile apps available in various mobile application marketplaces, how does one become a user of a specific mobile application?

MTV reports that 53% of mobile application users downloaded and installed a mobile application onto their Smartphone because the mobile app was recommended from a personal friend or colleague while 52% claimed that they rely on user reviews of a specific mobile application before they decided to download it onto their Smartphone. 42% credited their motive to download a mobile application onto their Smartphone after seeing a friend use that particular mobile app and another 47% claimed they discovered a specific mobile application while browsing thru various mobile application marketplaces.

The mobile application industry is certainly gaining popularity as we advance into the future and more and more individuals start getting addicted to specific mobile applications (the most popular being mobile gaming applications and mobile organizing applications), the more fuel which will be given to this industry which is already moving at an extremely fast pace. The future is bright for mobile application developers/mobile application development firms and they can expect a lot more development for mobile applications as additional individuals start getting drawn into the world of mobile applications and mobile application marketplaces.

Rise of the Mobile Application Development Wave

The Mobile and Wireless Industry is considered one of the most promising, up and coming industries today. Companies such as Apple, RIM, Microsoft, Google, Nokia, Palm and Samsumg are growing and benefiting greatly from the high demand of mobile devices and the wide array of mobile applications that follow. In the past, mobile phones were used solely for the purposes of conducting phone calls, but in present day mobile phones are now used for a wide variety of functionality ranging from phone calls to surfing the web or watching television.

With so much attention and growth seen in the mobile industry, many Investors and Venture Capitalists are starting to invest heavily into mobile application start-up companies and small-mid size social networking companies in hopes of getting their feet into the next Facebook or Twitter before it is too late. The emergence of the iPhone, Andriod, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7 Mobile Markets gives investors’ optimism that they will be able to create the next mobile application that will emerge as the top selling app in specific mobile marketplaces.

As promising and appealing as these ventures may initially seem, Venture Capitalists and Investors should remember that a similar trend happened about a decade ago during the “dotcom” boom and the ball eventually fell back to the ground. It must be realized that although there is room for tremendous growth and success in the mobile industry, there will also be fierce competition from all corners of the globe which will make it extremely difficult to differentiate and gain a competitive advantage in the mobile market.

For that reason, it may be wise for Venture Capitalists to invest in established mobile application development companies who have already proven their expertise in the market rather than jumping on the unproven inexperienced start-up companies. Remember to ride this new wave in technology cautiously because even though the wave may be big to begin with; very rarely does it maintain its power before crashing down.
